SECOND EDITION THE NEW JOURNAL, “SOCIETY."

Wc are pleased to record our impressions of the third number of this journal. The prevailing tone of it is admirable and the matter sufficiently diversified to make it acceptable to ‘‘-all sorts abd conditions ” of people. The front page has some very /sensible articles on two or three of the burning questions of the day in " No# Zea land notably on the Licensing Law ; . and its inconsistencies, and the Gaming and Lotteries Bill, and the leading column is devoted to a well-written 1 article* bn law reform. These several subjects -are treated with power, and the writing has ho trace of vulgarity. In journals of this class, there is almost always a tendency to overstep the bounds of good taste. It Is an easy descen t frora i - harmless Eersiflage to personalities, but we ave every hope, judging from the number before us, that the manage mentpf this journal will not pander to depraved tastes by any Such wretched ■tuff as was recently before, the public. A healthy jocularity that amuses all and wounds none is what we look for in a society journal, and, above . all, a, respectful Handling of.such subjects as. held dear or sacred by the mass of ■ensible and well-conducted people; > We wish the new journal success.
