V (Per steamer at Auckland.) [Special to the Sydney “EvoningNeWs.”] San Francisco, ,Jan, 30. Sir Henry Parkes is still in Sun Francisco. He has had an interview with the leading officials of the city and was courteously received by all. With regard to the wool duties the opinions of leading politicians here give little,-en-couragement to hope that the Premier’s mission in this respect will prove successful. -The- general belief is that the proposal for the reduction of,the duties on Australian wool cannot be entertained by the Government of the United States, being inconsistent with the protectionist policy. London, Jan. 30.
Tricketl’s friends and admirers in England are anxious to match him against Hanlnn again. Matters have been talked over with Han!an and. bis backers, and Hanlan has expressed ! his willingness to row Trickott for £6OO a side und the championship, but Trckett’a London friends can only raise £2OO, _ The Bosnian insurgents are being commanded;by Russian officers. ' As a result of the settlement on the Bourse in Paris in connection with the recent financial failures, the rate of discount at Belgium has been raised to 9 per cent. The directors of the Batik of England have also raised the’mininirim rate of discount, which is now fixed at 6 per cent. The Parisian Banks guaranteed an advance ot 85,000,000 francs to help the authorised brokers. Several firms in Germany are reported to have failed. Considerable excitement was produced throughout France by the announcement that the Union General Bank, which was founded by Roman Catholic financiers, and which was regarded as one of the soundest financial institutions in Paris, has suspended payment. The Corporation of Lyons Stock Brokers has become bankrupt.
