SECOND EDITION PERMANENT IMPROVEMENTS.

The half mile of coast from the Breakwater southwards is the scene of several busy operations now. A large number of men are engaged in fixing the metals for the new station arrangements, just now being at work in getting ballast for the lines laid down. For this purpose a line of rails has been laid from opposite the baths to the beach, where the shingle is obtained ; other bands are laying down new sidings about the Belford Mills ; others fixing a turntable ; at the new stores of the Farmers’ Association ; others, again, are at work on the temporary engine shed opposite the foot of George street. A good number of hands—bricklayers and carpenters—are engaged on the stores just mentioned. The walls of this large building are already carried above the first floor, and the carpenters are now at work fixing the massive beams and supports for the upper floor. Bruce’s mill is rapidly approaching completion, the framing of the roof being nearly all fixed, and the builders’ scaffolding will be soon taken down. The old name, we observe, is to be laid aside, for on the southern wall there is painted in large characters the name “ Royal Flooring Mills,” The building will be a credit not only to the town and district but to the colony, and the enterprising proprietors deserve the thanks of the community for setting a bold example,
