CAPTAIN SUTTER AND THE “HERALD."

[to the Editor.] that the Board of Education has tested the validity of Captain Sutter’s statement, I need not again refer to it; but I freely excuse him for what he said in reference to my connection with Mr Belfield, and beg to assure him that I am no more dependent on my honoured employer for my “bread and butter’’ than I am upon Captain Sutter. In a free country like this, whilst blessed with health and a sane mind, I am dependent on no man. Fortunately this is not the age of serfdom. , We left that behind us many years before we embarked for New Zealand. I could never work for any .employer. who purchased' my conscience, with my labour. In this respect all our employees are happily unfettered ; and when I cried “Bosh,” it was an ejaculation wrung from me fay the force of what: I kne w to be an unfounded charge, arid had.it been Captain Sutter who had .come under the lash in a similar manner, .. ! could not have held my peace. I may say that I had not the least idea; of writing to,your paper till shown the South Canterbury Timks of Friday evening. As to the truth of my letter, fortunately the meeting ivag onej and my fellow townsmen can judge between ust —Yours, &c. ' : •' D. HA6GETT.
