THE NEXT CHAIRMAN OF COMMITTEES.

The latest rumor from Wellington, says the Auckland “ Star,” is that the the first party contest in the House will be over the election of the Chairrimn of Committees. It will be remembered that ut the late general election Mr Seymour, who has been Chairman of Committees for several years, lost his sear, there is therefore a fair field in the new Parliament. The Government were desirous that Colonel Trimble should be appointed. He has several times filled the position of Chairman of Committees temporarily, he fancies himself for the offioe, and as he has been a firm friend of the Ministry he was clearly their candidate. But it seems that the Otago Opposition section, comprehending nearly all the members tor that provincial district, have determined that Mr J. >V. Thomson, member for Giutha, shall be nominated by Mr Macandrew. They have not communicated on the subject with any of the Opposition members fort ibis province. Mr Thomson was Speaker of the Otago Provincial Council and has had .considerable experience in presiding over committees in the House. He is an older member than Colonel Trimble and is more popular with members generally. In the event of a contest, in the present position of parties, he would be likely to win. Indeed, we should think it not impossible that the Hall Government would accept his nomination, as the Grey. Government accepted the nomination of Mr Seymour by the then Opposition. ■ . )
