[By tELEGRAPH.] WELLINGTON RACES. • Wellington, Feb. 2i; The first day of the Wellington Summer Meeting was a great success, the weather and racing being all that could be wished. The attendance when the Cup was run- was about 2500. The rails were well lined with carriages but the stand was only half full, very few ladies being present! No sweeps were allowed openly, but several were indulged in on the sly, and the police did not seem to be very anxious to interfere. There were two totalisators at work, and £lBlB was put through the two during the : afternoon, the best dividend being that paid on Hilda for the. Cup. . For this race there were 264 subscriptio’ns at £2, of whieh 77 were on Salvage, Bl King Quail, 41 Pisbatorious, 28 ; „Sjr George, 26 Lady Emma, 18 Poet,'and 13 Hilda.. The dividend was £36 12s. Hilda was not expected to be in it owing to her late aocident at. Auckland, and-the-. result of the: - race was : a complete surprise!‘ The proceedings - commenced inauspiciously with a walk-over for the Maiden, Salvage being reserved for the big money! In the Hurdle Race none ,pf the light .weights . were in it‘‘ ! wlien it came to galloping, qncj Clarence got all the best of Agent in the run home. The Cup,, was a veijy open race right up to the finish. The Plying Stakes produced a splendid finish between Luna and Mischief; 'Wellington Cup. , . Mr.ißates’ Hilda* 4yrs, 6st 4lbs (Thompson) 1 Hon.
