£333 has been collected for the families of the man recently drowned in the Heathcote.

The ships Qurunui and Taranaki sail from Port Chalmers for London to-day. Among the passengers by the former is Mr A. Chetham Strode, who was for many years Resident Magistrate in Dunedin.

An inquest was held at Temuka yesterday before J. Beswick Esq., Coroner, and a jury of whom Mr F. Franks was chosen foreman, on the body of the child of Mrs Lew’s, who was burned to death in a tent on the Orari swamp. The evidence of the mother, Mrs Lewis, and of two other witnesses having been taken, a verdict of accidental death was returned. t

At the Temuka Coart this morning this morning, before S. D. Barker, and J. Mendelson, Esqs., J.P.’s, a couple of civil cases were heard :—Mrs Douglass v. Mrs Bourkc, claim 225. Defendant paid 10s into Court, and 4s cost of summons, and plaintiff agreeing to accept this, judgment was given accordingly. Mrs-Louis ,r. J. Barrett, claim £2 18s lid; judgment by default was recorded with costs. ‘

The weekly session of the English Lodge Victory No. 42, 1.0.G.T. was held last evening at the Foresters’Hall. The chair was taken by Bro, W. C. Silverton, Lodge Deputy. Two candidates were proposed for membership, and two initiated, and officers for the next term were nominated and elected. They will be installed next week, and a full meeting being expected, Bro. Tichbon, G.W.C, will on that occasion give a resume of the proceedings of the late session of the Grand Lodge.

At the .Dunedin'R.M. Court yesterday Messrs Hamilton and. Willis sued the Union S.S. Company for £IOO damages for breach of. agreement in failing to land, the Pomeroy company in Dunedin from Lyttelton in ,'time to open on the night advertised. In evidence it was stated the expenses of the company were about £240 per'week, exclusive of arrangements with Miss Pomeroy, who was to receive 70 per cent of the profits. The case was ad* journed till Wednesday. A peculiar question has arisen in respect to the new Licensing Act, and in connection with the Wellington races this week. The present Licensing Bench ceased to exist the moment the new Licensing Districts were proclaimed, which took place about a week ago, and as at least a fort-, night must elapse before Commissioners can be elected,the question arises, as. to whether any licenses , can-be granted under . the new Act. If they cannot be granted it will be illegal to sell liquors on the racecourse on Thursday and Friday next.

We desire to call the attention of , onr readers to the prospectus the Keast and McCarthy 1 Dunedin Brewery, to work which a company is now being formed. The undertaking is one that is sure to be crowned with success, and an admirable opportunity for investing is thus offered. The brewery was originally started on'a capital of sonic X2OO, and ■ in a short space of time the firm that originated it had realised a capital and assets amounting to over X25,00Q. The business is still in a nourishing condition, and with-' the additional capital brought into it by the step that is now being taken, it will go ahead in a manner that will ensure large profits to every shareholder.

The foundation stone of the Christchurch Exhibition was laid yesterday afternoon by the Mayor. A large number of men are at work, and the ground lines of the building are already cut. In reply to a communication sent by Messrs Joubcrt and ■Twopeny ; to the Union S.B. Company, a letter has been received from Mr Mills, Acting Manager, stating that at Melbourne and Sydney goods had been carried to the Exhibion at ordinary rates, and the unsold brought back free, and the Union Company would be happy to place those intended for the Christchurch Exhibition on the same footing. The question of making a reduction in the passenger fares during the Exhibition was under the consideration of the Directors, and their decision would be made known shortly.
