The nor’-westers are reported to have done great damage to the standing crops in North Canterbury. We remind our readers that the “ Mirror of the Zulu War” will be shown this evening at the Theatre Royal. The principal events of the war itself, some of the preparations at Home, and scenes representing the the funeral ceremonies of the unfortunate Prince Imperial of France, are comprised in this exhibition. Two or three sets of extensive and complicated mechanical arrangements give additional force to the representations of some of the scenes, on the whole the exhibition must be one of the best, if not the best of the kind that has ever been seen in the colony. An extra attraction is provided in the distribution each evening of valuable presents. Beats may be secured at Mr Frledlanders.

It is not easy to astonish a Maori, or to impress him with awe and wonder at the appliances or tri nmphs of civilisation. Even Eewi, who was introduced to all the sights and scenes and “lions” of Auckland, went away to his native home only impressed with two incidents: —Mr Superintendent Hughes throwing a column of water up in the air from a city fire plug, and making rainbows in it; and Mr Reynolds, with the aid of machinery, sawing up blocks of green stone. Eewi said he was under the impression that only the Atua (God) could made rainbows, but he now saw the pakeha manufacturing rainbows at pleasure.
