The first match of Shaw’s English Eleven was commenced yesterday at Dunedin, where three days’ play bad been arranged for. The day was riot particularly "well suited for cricket, $ cold wind making it unpleasant, for players and spectators, About fifteen hundred .persons were present. The fame was not very interesting, the Inglishmen playing without spirit as/ they could see their victory would be an •ary One. Otago went first to the wickets, and the first five batsmen made a respectable stand; Battray played the best innings, staying in over an hour, When the fourth wicket, fell, the score stood at 'SO; the othei thirteen falling for nn addition of only. 34. Midwinter (formerly an Australian player), Peate, a left-handed bowler, and Bates, one of tbe lbest slow bowlers of the day, did the trundling for the Englishmen. Bates went on in Peate’s place when eight wickets ; were down, the : score, standing at 71, arid his slows quickly, proved fatal to half-a-dozen batsmen. The Otago men were all out by 4.40, and then some time was spent in preparing a new wicket, which was unexpectedly demanded by the English captain. Three quarters of an hour was left for the Englishmen, and in that time they made 17 runs. The scores for the ; day were as follows : Otago Eighteen— Firtt Innings.
