London Dec. 19,

Serious disturbances have taken place at Suez, arising out of the murder of a soldier by the Bedouins. His comrades demanded instant vengeance, and proceeded to ransack the town. It seems a riot ensued, and u body of soldiers going to the Governor’s residence, attacked him wi£h violence. For some time the town was in a state of tumult, but eventually order was restored. The Socialist movement is spreading in Austria, where many of the leaders expatriated from Germany have sought refuge. The Austrian authorities have also taken action against them, and the police at Vienna have arrested 18.

The celebrated Cardinal Sedochowski, Archbishop of Posen and Primate of Poland, who was imprisoned by the German Government in 1874, has resigned his See, and the Pope with much reluctance has consented to accept his resignation. His action is attributed to his desire to confirm the friendly relations!existing between the Vatican and Germany. Another earthquake has occurred in Switzerland in the Canton of Vaud.

The Swiss Assembly has now finder consideration a Bill to provide for tbe protection of patents. Nussali Bey, Governor of Tunis, has resigned. He expected that his discharge was imminent, and elected to resign.

Fogs of unusual severity have been experienced in the Midland counties. Several cases of loss of life are reported of persons who missed their way owing to the denseness of the atmosphere, and fell into canals and were drowned.

An investigation into the cause of the panic in the church at Warsaw through which many people lost their lives has disclosed the fact that a false alarm of fire had been raised by a Jewish pickpocket, and on this fact becoming known the rage of the populace in the city was excited. They proceeded to commit great outrages on the Jewish inhabitants. The Jewish shops and other places were gutted, and the Jews themselves bad to fly for their lives, many of them being severely maltreated The riots were not quelled until the military weee called out and the streets patrolled by bodies of soldiery. A collision took place in Queenstown harbor, by the Cork, Cunard steamer, running into and sinking the Helenslea, a vessel belonging to San Francisco. Some of the crew of the latter were drowned. A destructive fire has occurred at Rochdale, a large manufacturing town in Lancashire. A big building used as a’granary caught fire and was destroyed. Other premises adjoining were also injured before the flames could be extinguished. The damage done is estimated at £150,000,

The fund established under the presidency of the Lord Mayor of London, for the purpose of offering assistance to landlords in Ireland, has reached the sum of £9OOO. The supervision of the fund has been placed under the direction of six ladies.

Nineteen British sailors belonging to a vessel lying in the harbor of New Orleans have been arrested for creating a disturbance at a public meeting held in that city, in regard to the Irish question. Sentiments were expressed by some of the speakers which the .sailors forcibly resented and a riot ensued. Eventually the seamen were arrested and imprisoned. Considerable dissatisfaction exists in Natal with the recent proceedings of the Legislature at Durban, the capital. An agitation has been set on foot to request the Members of the Chamber to return the pay they received for their services, it being maintained that the revenue of the colony is not sufficient to justify the granting of remuneration. Serious disturbances have taken place in the island of Hay ti, in the West Indies. An attempt was made to overturn the Government of the Republic of Hayti by the inhabitants of the western portion of the Island, but after some encounters with the insurgents the authorities were enabled to suppress the revolution. The loss of life during the insurrection amounted to 150.
