Elizabeth Graham, barque, from London early. The steamer Waitaki hauled alongside the wharf to-day and discharged her cargo into railway trucks. The discharging was done with the steamer's own gear, and the gaff used for hoisting the goods was too short, so that an immense amount of labor was necessitated to get the goods into the trucks, and a proportionate amount of time wasted. Time after time a sling full of goods would he suspended over the edge of the truck—in no case could it be got over the truck without hard pulling on guys by half a dozen men—and then a movement of the steamer would take it away again. The use of the wharf crane should be insisted upon by the local authorities.
