This is to give facilities to persons desirous of seeing the Invercargill races. A rough cartoon representing the chances of the Timaru candidates in the election was on view to-day in one of the windows of the Clarendon Hotel. Mr Turnbull was represented standing on the summit of a pole waving a flag in triumph. Near the pole a high and steep bank was shown, and a second candidate had constructed a bridge or scaffold from the face of the bank lb the pole with a bundle of sticks. These proved rotten, and trusting his weight, upon them they gave way and the candidate (Mr Partridge) is represented as falling helpless. Lower down the third candidate is seen endeavoring to clamber up the bank as a means of reaching the top of the pole, but the footing is treacherous and he too seems likely to be landed at the foot. There are a number of other figures in the sketch, one intended to represent the proprietor of the “ Herald,” looking sadly at the lower candidate’s vain efforts to mount.
Some boys were annoying a venerable negro, who astounded them by solemnly saying : “ Take car, you young white wilyuns, or some ob yon may be do Czar .of Roshy some of dese days, an’ den I’ll jest’ t’row a bottle ob ’sploding stuff at yerfeet, and den whar’ll you bo ?”
