TIMARU SCHOOL COMMITTEE

SECOND EDITION

The ordinary monthly meeting of this committee was held last evening. Present : Messrs R. B. Walcot (chairman), A, Hart, W. Jones,, J. Reilly, T. G. Rowley and J. Hall. Mr Walcot made an explanation regarding the withdrawal of the suit, Walcot v, Howell, concerning the lagality of the latter’s election to the Board of Education. The suit had been withdrawn by Mr Harper, the solicitor who had charge of it, and Mr Walcot explained that in withdrawing it Mr Harper had done so on his own responsibility, and contrary to his (Mr Walcot’s) instructions. The teachers’ report showed the total number an the rolls at the Main and Side Schools to be 1104 and the average attendance 820 - 8.

The Sub Committee appointed to enquire into Mrs Tegg’s complaint in reference to the alleged ill treatment of her children ami herself by the teachers at the Side School, presented their report, and exonerated the teacher, Miss Haase, from all blame.

It was resolved that the report of the Committee appointed to enquire into Mrs Tegg’s complaint be approved of and adopted, and that in future steps be taken under clause 9G of ’the Education Act to prosecute any person interfering with a teacher or in any way disturbing the work of the schools. The clause referred to makes any person disturbing a school or wilfully insulting teachers in the presence of the pupils liable to a peaalty of £2. It was resolved to give a school holiday on the 16tb, the Anniversary day, and that the Christmas holidays should commence on December 21, and terminate on January 22.

The annual distribution of prizes will take place on the breaking up day, and on the following day the annual entertainment will be given in the Theatre Royal, which has already been engaged for the purpose. The Chairman and Messrs Hart, and Jones were appointed to select prizes, and promises of several private prizes were received. Accounts amounting to £l4 were passed for payment, and the meeting terminated.
