(Per s.B. Arawata at the Bluff.) Melbourne, Nov. 30. The Crown has commenced proceedings against two well-known promotors of race sweeps. G. P. Marrick, secretary of the Shire of Marong, has levanted. Criminal proceedings will be instituted against him. Two girls, aged 14, were drowned in the Oampaspe river bathing. They were found clasped in each other’s arms in eleven feet of water. Three young ladies have been successful for the first year in the course for the degree of Bachelor of Arts of the University. It is considered extremely doubtful that Government will be able to carry the Land Bill in its present shape before the recess. • Sydney. Bandman Yates was tried by CourtMartial aboard the Wolverine, Captain Maxwell, of the Emerald, being President. Prisoner was charged with desertion and perjury. He pleaded not guilty to both charges, and submitted ha did not legally belong to the service, and had signed no document. The Court found him guily of both charges, and sentenced him to two years, and then to be dismissed the service.
Cases of smallpox continue to be reported almost daily.
