MR TURNBULL AND THE “TIMARU HERALD.”
[to the editor.] Sir, —That Mr Turnbull’s criticism of the “ Timam Herald ” is just and true, is verified by yesterday’s subheader and to-day’s leader, for the former shows fear and rage at being fairly attacked and unmasked, and the latter a slight recovery of incipient reason and a return to the old style of feeble sarcastic writing that has become so familiar to readers of the “ Herald.” This morning’s article shows how cowardice with all its attendant meanness can take revenge, and how the conductors of the “ Timaru Herald ” fear and hate Mr Turnbull for his daring to attack them, and for his ability to think for himself, and his refusal not to be dictated to by them. It is the boast of the “ Timaru Herald ” that it can crush anyone whom it once makes up its small mind to thoroughly hate, and ever since Mr Turnbull has entered Parliament it has wilfully misrepresented him gand his
actions. The editor of a newspaper is generally supposed to be tolerably well versed in the English Classics, bat that it of the “ Timara Herald ’’ has failed to grasp the meaning and understand the points of Mr Turnbull’s speech, and even to call it Billingsgate, shows how “ utterly utter” he is.' Mr Turnbull's speech was a masterpiece of sarcasm, and was thoroughly enjoyed by every one who heard it. Fancy the ‘‘scholarly’ it of the “ Timaru Herald” calling- a Yahoo a bird! Was this one of the many intentional “ errors ’’ of the “Timara Herald?” It is well known that “Denis McCarthy ” and “Paterfamsas ” are members of the “Herald’s” staff, and that any “explanation” that appears in that paper’s columns is merely an evasion of the truth. Kindly insert this letter in your columns, and if either the editor or sub editor call on you for my name kindly give them my card, which I enclose. and am &c., TUSSOCKS. Timaru, December 2.
