MR TURNBULL AND THE “HERALD.”

[to the editor.] Sib —My letter of yesterday, refering to the “ Timaru Herald’s” threatened proceedings against Mr Turnbull, which you were so obliging as to publish, no doubt told home, as I meant it to do. This morning it announces its intention of not taking action in the matter, but at the same time indulges in language intended to be detrimental to Mr Turnbull. They are wise in their generation in deciding to “ let sleeping dogs lie.” Assuredly the “ Herald” would have got the worst of it,—indeed has got the worst of it—besides covering itself with ridicule. I think no paper in New Zealand has indulged so much in personalities. For instance, I have before me now an. article describing Sir Julius Vogel as a “ political blackleg,” and so on ad nauseam. By a singular coincidence I remembered reading, somewhere, similar language to that used by Mr Turnbull, which caused the “ Timaru Herald ” to writhe so much, and turning to one of our English classics I very soon found the following :—“ My Northern friends have accused me, with justice, of personality towards was to be done with him and his dirty pack, who feed by ‘ lying and slandering ’ and slake their thirst by ‘ evil speaking.’ I have adduced facts, already well known, and of ’s mind I have stated my free opinion, nor has he thence sustained any injury ; what scavenger was ever soiled by being pelted with mud ?” Now, these are Lord Byron’s words. I commend them to the consideration of your contemporary. TRUTH. Timaru, 2nd December.
