The minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed, correspondence was read as follows : From the Engineer, regretting that owing to the steamer being delayed, ho would be unable to return to Tiraaru in time for the meeting of this day. From the Marine Department, relative to the proposed change of light and color of light in the Lighthouse. The Department would undertake to supply and fix a fourth order light, and to taka at its value the fifth order light now here, the Board, of course, paying for it. The character of the lights on the neighboring coast was such that the only color that could be adopted as distinctive for Tiraaru would be green. The Chairman thought that as they were going to use gas the present fifth order light would do quite well. It was intended to make an experiment to see how far the green light could bo seen. From Messrs Jones and Peters, with reference to the penalties proposed to be enforced against them, and Captain Sutter’s charges of delaying the work. As the Chairman, Engineer, and Capt. Sutter were absent, the consideration of the letter was postponed till next meeting. ... ; The matter of penalties being still unsettled, the Chairman had withheld £l5O of the amount passed for payment to Messrs Jones and Peters. This action of the Chairman was formally approved. Prom the N. M. and A. Com., offering six surf boats and their 12 h.p. locomotive engine and steam erane for £460. They were required by the railway authorities to clear them off the ground or they would not think of accepting so low a price. After some discussion it was resolved to offer £IOO for the three best boats, the engine was not required and the other boats were almost done for. From Brown and Co., Sheffield, respecting the despatch of 46 steel wheels for the crane; cost £206. Prom the manager N.Z.L. and M.A. Com. respecting shipment of buoys, anchors, and chains for the Board. From Mr Collins, driver of the landing service engine, complaining that his position on theßoard’s staff was indefinite. Messrs Sutter and Moody were appointed a committee to enquire into the complaint. SALARIES, On an application from Mr Mills, Harbormaster, asking for increase of salary, a notice of motion was given for next meeting to consider the whole question of the salaries and duties of the Board’s officers. A letter vas read from Mr Meredith, Lighthouse keeper, who had received notice of dismissal, for a reconsideration of his case, and his application was backed up by a petition from a number of leading residents. The letter and petition were referred to the Finance Committee for consideration. USE OF SHINGLE, Mr Moody moved that the Engineer be instructed to report upon the removal of shingle from the beach for town purposes, as to where it should be taken from, and as to fair price per ton or load to be charged for it. SHIPPING BATES. A discussion took place upon a suggestion to increase the rates on wool shipped to and coal landed from vessels at the outer anchorage. Mr Teschemaker opposed the raising of the rates on wool. Even now it , was cheaper, or there was very little difference, between sending wool Homo direct, sending it via Dunedin, and if the charges were raised all the wool would be sent away coastwise and the trade of the port would auffer. It was agreed to take no steps to alter the charges at present. LANDING SERVICE. The report of the manager of the landing service was read. It showed that during the month 4032 tons were landed and shipped from 20 vessels. The gross earnings bad been £672 16s 9d, and the nett £229 Is. BREAKWATER. The report by Mr Hamilton, Clerk of Works (in the absence of the Engineer) on the progress made on contract No. 4, was read. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £2Bl 6s 10.1 on harbor works account, and to £443 15s 9d on landing service account, were passed for payment.
