SECOND EDITION

The “ Standard” states that the attention of Parliament next session will be directed to the amendment of the laws relating to the government of counties, and the expediency of altering the laws and practices of Parliament with regard to obstruction. There has been further rioting at Clare, in King’s County. The military and constabulary stationed in that county have been reinforced. A decisive battle has taken place in Algeria between French troops and nsurg ent Arabs, in which the latter were completely routed. A quantity of dynamite on board tho steamer Glasgow, at Bristol, exploded and nine persons were killed and great injury done to the ship. Sarah Bernhardt, the actress, is ill.

The Tariff Convention, sitting at Chicago, is strongly in favor of a protectionist policy. The Australian residents in London have decided to present a testimonial to McArthur, in recognition of the interest he has always manifested in regard to the Australian colonies. Another agrarian outrage has occured in Kerry. Five persons broke into a house and half murdered a farmer for paying rent. A similar outrage occurred in Cork.

Austria has increased her import duties for protective purposes. An attempt has been made to assassinate the Deputy-Lieutenant of Westmeath, who was fired at twice, but fortunately escaped without injury.
