ELECTION ITEMS.
At Kaiapoi yesterday Mr Taiaroa was the only person nominated for the Southern Maori District, and he was declared duly elected. Mr J. T. Matson has declined, after consideration, to oppose Mr Rolleston for Aron. Mr Wason, who is “ out ” for Wakanui, has been asked and declined to oppose Mr Wright for Ashburton. Mr Ormond is receiving votes of confidence wherever he goes in his election tour. Mr J. R. Clement, a new candidate for Waimate, addressed the electors on Wednesday evening. He recommends that the large land owning companies be bought out by the Government, as the East India Company and the Hudson’s Bay Company were, because such monopolies were found to be incompatible with progress. He is not in favor of Bible reading in schools,but would give the capitation grant to any good school. He could not say he was in favor of the Hall Government, but they had done what the people required, and he would make use of them so long as they continued to do so. Mr Smith, a working man’s candidate fot Waipawa, obtained a vote of confidence by a large majority at Waipawa. He opposes the property tax, and advocates a progresssive land tax to cause the gradual subdivifion of large estates, though he repudiates the “ bursting ” policy. [By Telegraph.] Wellington, Nov, 25. Major Brown addressed the electors of the town last evening. He declared himself in favor of a land tax as introduced by Sir George Grey, and of assistance being given to denominational schools. Ho was in favor of a limited protection to local industries. A vote of confidence was earned.
