POULTRY AND SONG BIRD SOCIETY.
We understand that a movement is on foot among the poultry breeders and bird fanciers of Timaru to found a society similar to those at Christchurch and elsewhere, with the object of encouraging, by special shows and otherwise, improvements iu domesticated birds of all kinds. There are, we are informed, about a hundred persons in Timaru and the immediate neighborhood who are more or less enthusiastic on the subject of poultry, pigeons, canaries, etc-’, and if there ore but half that number, or even less, the proposed society should be successful. At present the only opportunity afforded our bird fanciers to exhibit their birds is at the Agricultural Show and here only a few classes of birds can be shown. A greater drawback is that the Agricultural Show is at the wrong season of the year fpr.a bird show, being too late, the birds having by the end of October been paired and shut up for breeding. Then again owners of valuable birds will not be very willing to expose them almost unprotected on the open show ground, where there is a risk of inclement weather having to be submitted to. If sucil a society were formed a Show could be held at the season of the year when birds of all kinds would show at their b- st, and it could be held in some building in town, where no danger of loss need be feared, A number of breeders have met to consider the matter and Mr W. Ingram has consented to act as secretary pro tern. Rules have been drafted, and a considerable amount of information has been collected, which will be laid before a general meeting to be presently called. In the meantime Mr Ingram will be glad to receive communicationsfrom anyone interested, addressed Main South Road, or Box 109, P. 0., Timaru.
