Mr J. Trist has just received from Home a specimen of the Lascelles patent collapsing boat, which from its appearance promises to be very useful to sportsmen for shooting on lagoons and for other purposes. It is made of well-oiled canvas stretched upon a stiff framing, the lines of junction of sides, ends, and bottom being flexible to allow of the boat being folded, a stout cord holding the several parts in place when fixed for use. On shipboard the boat can be used as a cot loops being provided to suspend it by. It has an apparent carrying capacity of two ordinary persons, and additional security is given by means of an air chamber, attached to each side, externally. The price, £6, is very moderate, and should ensure a demand for the boat for sporting purposes.

A correspondent of the London “ Times’ suggests that the permission to use postage stamps as receipt stamps will open the door to a petty but systematic fraud, by which the revenue may suffer very considerably, He points out that it would not require much ingenuity to convert imperfectly defaced postage stamps taken from envelopes into passable receipt stamps. Every day among the letters of any large firm a certain number of the stamps may be found which have been defaced so slightly that if the same stamps are used afterwards for receipts the defacing marks would be concealed under the writing which must be put on a receipt stamp.
