The “Argus ” to-day publishes a leading article in which the revelations made regarding the business of the Bank of Victoria during the progresss of Thorpe’s trial are characterised as a scandal. Sugar. Mauritius advices report that at latest dates 813 tons had sailed and 1070 tons were loading for New Zealand ports.
Captain Sutter will address the electors of Gladstone at Pleasant Point on Saturday evening.
The ship Merope, which sailed from Lyttelton on August 10 arrived at London on the sth inst.
The Secretary to the Timaru Athletic Club notifies that the committee and officebearers are to assemble at the Criterion at 10.30 a.m, to-morrow to proceed to the Sports’ grounds. Also that competitors in any event must produce their tickets of membership before starting.
The Timaru Athletic Club have provided a good variety of entertainment for the holiday makers to-morrow. Their sports on the Wai-iti show grounds promise to be very good, the fields being numerous, and in the evening a very liberal entertainment will be given in the Theatre, the programme of which is advertised in our columns this evening. The weather is not very promising, but it is to be hoped it will clear before morning.
