NEWS OF THE DAY.
The owners of the Lillie Denham announce that they will run two excursion trips at very reasonable fares on the Prince of Wales’ Birthday, starting from the wharf at half-past ten and half past two. On the following day the launch will be “ laid on ” for a special fishing excursion, starting at half-past ten. The Geraldine County Council meet to-morrow. This is the last meeting of the present members, a general election taking place on the 16th inst. There are indications that the election will result in a Council of very different composition to the present one being returned. A drapers’ assistant in an Auckland shop accidently set fire to some goods in the window when lighting the gas. Estimated cost of this carelessness, £BOO. The Dunedin City Council has decided on appointing a health officer at a salary of £l5O per annum. A number of sticking-up cases have lately occurred in Adelaide, which seems to be infested with daring thieves. Mr Bathgate, a candidate for Eoslyn, and the “ Otago Daily Times ” have fallen foul of each other, and some sharp passages of arms have taken place between them. Mr C. Johnstone, a candidate for one the Wellington seats, while of opinion that prisoners should be self-supporting, was decidedly against prisoners being taught skilled labor, that is, being taught a trade that would interfere Jwith others who had not committed crime. He thought something might be done in the way of utilising prison labor to great advantage fn the manufacture of paper bags, which would give employment to all classes—men, women, and children.
We pride ourselves very often on living in an age of progress. We think of those who lived a generation before us as being wonderfully behind. Some of our public speakers revel in rhetoric about our national greatness, and point with adulation to our triumphs and achievements, But, whether our Ministers make mention of it ip pur next session of Parliament or not, it is a well-known fact, here in South Canterbury, that the best value for ready money in all lines of men’s and boys’ ready made clothing, men’s, women’s and children’s boots and shoes, is to be had at J. Strachan’s, (Advx.)
