The regular monthly meeting of the Caledonian Lodge will be held to-morrow evening. An Auckland gentleman offers £SOO for the erection of an Art Gallery if others will aid, “An Englishman” writes to the “Lyttelton Times ” offering to subscribe to a “ Te Whiti Defence Fund” if one can be got up. The roof of a new house at Auckland fell in on Saturday, and five men who were at work shingling fell with it, receiving some injuries, shoddy work somewhere. Shortly after 10 p.m. on Friday the verger of the Roman Catholic Church, Christchurch discovered a male infant about three months old lying wrapped up in a shawl near one of the entrances to the grounds. An intercolonial weather exchange, dated Sydney Saturday evening, states that the weather in Australia was generally fine. There was a marked depression off King George’s Sound, and a moderate one off the Queensland coast, with a high pressure all over South Australia. The Premier will probably not be allowed a “ walk over ’’ at the next election. A meeting will be held in the Leeston Town Hall next Saturday night “to consider the advisability of bringing forward a candidate to oppose our present member at the next general election.” Mr John Rennie is generally mentioned as being the contestant.
