Arrival at Parihaka.

Reading of Riot Act. Peaceful Attitude of the Natives.

(Pee Peess Association). Wellington, Nov. 5,11.30 a.in. The Government received the following from Mr Bryce :—“ Arrived at Parihaka at 9 a.m. Found the marae enclosure jammed. Mr Butler (interpreter) was directed to call on Te Whiti to give an answer to the Proclamation, but Te Whiti did not reply. At 9.30 the Riot Act was read. One hour will be allowed to elapse by law, and the marue’viiW then be surrounded. Hiroki is there. The Natives are dressed in holiday fashion. Seemingly it is not their intention to use other than passive resistance. Te Whiti, it is said, told the Natives to sit close and be stout hearted.”
