D, Murphy, and others.

TO THE ELECTORS OF GLADSTONE. GENTLEMEN, —I have much pleasure in complying with your very numerously signed Requisition, asking me to allow myself to be Nominated as your Candidate at the coming Election. In complying with that request, I must remind the Electors that the Electoral District of Gladstone extends over so large a tract of country, that it will be impossible for me to visit every Elector. I may state, for the information of those Electors who I have not the pleasure of knowing, and who do not know me personally—although never having been in Parliament—, I am not altogether unknown to Politics. I was for five years a member of the Timaru and Gladstone Board of Works, where I think I did good service to our district. I believe in Liberalism, but not in Communism, which too many of the self-styled Liberals of the day, who advocate liberty for their own views but for no one else, in reality want. My view of Liberalism is : Let every man do as he likes so long as he respects the laws of bis country, but do not make bad laws and expect people to respect them. I object to direct taxation in any form, but if we must have a tax, I am of opinion that the property tax is the best. 1 am also of opinion that the present railway charges for produce could be reduced with advantage, both to the farmer and the Government. WATCHMAKER AND JEWELLER. JOSEPH "cOOKROFT, THE Dissolution of Partnership between Mr B. Gibson and myself having taken place, I intend carrying on the I business as formerly on my own acconnt, and will feel obliged if my friends and patrons will give me their support. I have recently visited Dunedin, where I have selected a new stock of Silver Goods, Watches, &c., which 1 am prepared to sell at considerably lower rates than hitherto, Botheram Watches, £7. TOBACCO AND FANCY GOODS SHOP. Begs to inform the Public of Timaru and surrounding District that he has Purchased the Business recently carried on by Mb B. Gibson, next door to Mr Cockroft’s, Jeweller, Main North Road, and hopes, by keeping the best description of all kinds of goods, to receive a share of their support. There is now on hand Tobaccos, Snuffs, Pipes, &c., in great variety, and will be Sold at Moderate Rates* I am, Gentlemen, Yours respectfully, THOMAS FISHER, M.D.
