Ivory’s b h Sweetmeat, 6yrs, 9st 3 The following horses started:— Sweetmeat, Wellington, Savanaka, First Water, Sir Modred, Suwarrow, Lord Burghley, Odd Trick, Waterloo, Bathurst, Canary, Wandering Jew, Trump Yoss, Darebin, Pawnbroker, Bandalbion, Czar, Pollio, Guinea, Carmen, Waxy, Greyhound, Santa Claus, Duchess, Cockney, Zulu, and Oxalta. Somnus cut out the running for the first three-quarters of a mile, followed by Sir Modred and Zulu. At threequarters of a mile from home Zulu took the lead, and was never caught, winning the race by two lengths. Time—3min 32£secs. The members of the betting ring win considerably by Zulu’s victory for the Cup.
The winner is by Barbarian(sire of Messrs Mason and Yallance’s Randwick) out of Maiden Blush, a daughter of Kingston, und is trained by T. Lamond, formerly trainer for Sir Hercules Robinson, who still occupies Zetland Lodge, near Sydney, from which so many of the Governor’s cracks have gone forth to victory, Zulu is a very handsome black horse standing about 15 hands Sinches, showing good quality all over, and remarkably well let down behind. He did not run as a two-year-old, but last season at the A. J. C. Spring Meeting he was unplaced with 7st slb in the Welter Handicap (1J mile), won by Othello ; was a bad third to Grand Flaneur and Oreswick in the Mares Produce Stakes (1£ mile), and was unplaced in the Randwick Plate (3 miles, w.f.a.), won by Sweetmeat. At the Sydney Turf Club Spring Meeting, carrying 6st 51b, he failed to get a situation in the Farewell Handicap won by Black Swan (9st). He did not appear again till the A.J.C. Autumn Meeting, where with 6st 41b he was displaced in the Doncaster Handicap (I mile and a furlong), won by Rapid Bay (Bst 41b) ; and with Gst 21b was unplaced in the Free Handicap won by Rapid Bay (Bst 121 b). At the Sydney J.C. Autumn Meeting he was unplaced carrying 6st 4lb in the Ely Handicap (6 furlongs), won by Rapid Bay (9st 81b), and with sst 121 b occupied a similar position in the Turf Club Handicap (I|mile), won by Rapid Bay (9st Gib). At Paramatta he scored his first win in the Paramatta (1£ miles), carrying Gst 51b, and beating four others, and next day he won the Birthday Handicap (lj mile), carrying 7st 31b, and beatingeight others. At ’the special meeting held in Sydney in honor of the Royal Princes, be was unplaced with 7st 51b in the Squadron Handicap mile], won by Sardonyx (sst 71b). He commenced the present season at the A.J.G. Spring Meeting by carrying Bst into second place in the. Sydney Handicap (1£ mile), won by Waxy (7st 121 b), and
with 6st 2lb finished third to Creswick (7st 41b) in the Waverley Handicap, (If mile). The Czar is by the imported Marquis (winner of the Two Thousand and Leger) out of Dagmar, a daughter of Maribyrnong, who won the Maribyrnong Plate of 1872. He has not appeared in public since he was a two-year old, at which age he started one of the best favorites for the Maribyrnong Plate, but his girths broke, and he failed to get a situation. He ran third in the Flying Stakes (6 furlongs) won by Sunshine, beating amongst others First Water, G-ipsy Cooper, and Caspian, and turned the tables on Sunshine next day by beating him, Caspian, and others in the All-aged Stakes (6 furlongs). He was unplaced in the Normanby and Ascot Vale Stakes, but with 7st 121 b ran second to Mercury (Bst 11b) in the Nursery Handicap (6 furlongs). Sweetmeat’s performance in carrying top weight into third place must be considered a great one, and proves, if any proof be needed, that ho is one of the stoutest hearted and best' stayers in Australia. Often as he has proved himself a clinker over a long couise, his best performance was his second, with 9st 31b, to First Water (7st 61b), in the Australian Cup, the 2f miles being run in 4min 1-J-sec.
