ELECTION ITEMS.
Mr Postlethwaite addressed the electors around Hilton at that place on Friday night, and received a vote of thanks and confidence. ■ To-night he speaks at Winchester. Messrs James Hassell and Shrimski are out for Oamaru. Mr J. Gould, one of the five Candi dates for Ashley, proposes that lawyers should be required to pay a license fee of, say £IOO, since they are not so subject to direct tax as others are. He ridiculed the railway returns as prepared for publication, and would like to see them made out in sections according as the traffic was directed. He warned the electors against returning representatives of the squatters interests, as they would give away the unsold lands. [By Telegraph.] Invercargill, Oct. 31. Dr Hodgkinson, a former member, addressed a meeting of the Wallace electors at Riverton on Saturday, receiving a vote of confidence. While not supporting Sir George Grey, ho believed it possible to get a better Government than the present, which had done harm as well as good.
