A BruteAuckland, Oct. 31 . W. Dawson, solicitor’s clerk, was this morning sentenced to three months imprisonment for heating a woman. Burglary. A burglar broke into Merrick s store, Albert street, last night and stole a till containing £2 worth of small change. RaratongaWellington, Oct. 31. Two documents received by the Governor, one from chiefs of Raratonga, and the other from influential English residents on the island, as to the alleged interference of a French man-of-war vessel, are published. Fire. The Greytown Club and the Working Men’s Club at Greytown were destroyed by fire on Saturday night. The fire originated in the Greytown Club, and was carried to the other Club. The following are the insurances : Graytown Club, £7lO in the New Zealand, and the Working Men’s Club, £SOO in the South British. Music Hath Charms-Sometimes. Masterton, Oct. 31. On Saturday evening a dinner was given by the citizens to the 82 » olunteers who are going to the front. Nearly. 100 attended. After the usual loyal toasts, the band being bent on fun, saluted His Excellency with “ The King oE the Cannibal Islands.” Mayor Rennall, who is contesting Wairarapa North, proposed “ The House of Representatives, coupled with the name of Mr George Beetharn,” whereupon the hand struck up “ The Dead March.” The solemn music produced an infuriating efEect on Mr Beetham’s supporters. Laughter and hisses brought the impressive music to an end, and one of Mr Beetham’s committee-men indignantly addressed the Chairman (Rennall) expressing the hope that he did not countenance the charge. Mr Rennall replied that as the Parliament was dead the music was quite appropriate, and shortly afterwards Mr Beetham in responding poured oil on the committee-men’s trouble by refusing to believe that any offence was intended. Melbourne Races. Dunedin, Oct. 31. The “ Times” has issued an Extra : Darebin and Waxy, 5 to 1, much fancied; Bathhurst, Savanaka, and Yoss, Bto 1; Santa Claus, 12 tol; Sir Modred 20 to 1. The bookmakers were heavily hit on Saturday. Shocking Death. Invercargill, Oct 31. On Saturday the bodies of a woman and child wore found in a ditch near One Tree Point, a few miles from Invercargill, in an advanced state of decomposition. They have been identified as those of a young married woman named Morrison and her child, who was subject to fits, and she had apparently been seized with a fit where she was found. She had been missed since Jane last. Vital Statistics-
