Mr T. Duncan is out for Waitaki, and Mr James Ashcroft, editor of the “ Otago Daily Times,” is mentioned as a probable candidate for Oamaru. Mr Shrimski will also stand for Oamaru.
Referring to the approaching elections and the “Working man cry,” the “ Eangitikei Advopate ” says“ Now, we take it that nine-tenths of, the people of New Zealand are, in the proper sense of the term, 4 working men.’ They have not been born with silver spoons in their mouths, but rather with wooden ladles, and all, that they possess, whether much or. little, _ has been acquired by their own unassisted efforts as 'working men.’ We would give a word of warning to ‘working men’ of all grades— Beware of the politician who comes forward as the champion of the * working man for be sure that, in the words of ‘ .Poor Richard,’ he has an axe to grind, and he wants you to turn the grind stone.” [By Telegbaph.] AUCKLAND, Oct. 18, Major Harris addressed 'a crowded meeting of his constituents last night at Otahubu. He gave a full account of his services to the district, and replied to Mr Buckland’s statements regarding himself. Mr Frank Lowry contests south Franklin against Mr Hamlin. Hamilton, Oct. 18. Mr McMinn has notified his candidature for Waipa. Wellington, Oct. 18. Mr Travers withdraws from the contest for Te Aro.
