LEVELS ROAD BOARD.

The ordinary monthly meeting of this Board was held yesterday. Present —Messrs Moody (chairman), Mee, Frew, and Sullivan.

In reply to a letter from the Geraldine County Council, asking the Board to allow their returning officer to conduct the next County election for this riding, it was resolved to reply that as the Board’s officer has his hands full, it would be better for the Council to appoint its own Returning Officer. Petitions were presented from a number of residents near Pleasant Point, asking the Board not to carry out their decision to impound cattle from the roads.

It was resolved to adhere to their decision, and to request the Inspector of Police to take steps to have the wandering cattle nuisance abated. The Overseer’s report was read, and the following works were ordered to be carried out(1) Zig-zag by Pringle’s, tenders to be called for part of the work ; (2) tenders to be called for improving the Pareora Flat road ; (3) the Overseer to give access to Mr Abram’s farm, on The Brothers; (4) the road from Millar’s road to Munroe’s road to be done in accordance with the recommendations ; (5) tenders to be called for improving the road leading to the Manse, at Pleasant Point, Mr Inman had an interview with the Board with reference to the road leading to his land. The Overseer was instructed to call for tenders for the work to be done, and a petition from Messrs Rotherway and Hoaro for an improvement in their road was referred to the Overseer. He was also instructed to report on the Arowhenua and Seadown road.

The following tenders were accepted: —Contract No. 13, forming the Town Belt, —R. Forgan, £64. Contract No. 14, forming Seadown road, B. Cartwright, £9l 12s 6d. It was resolved—“ That in order to obtain the full subsidy on rates of 20s in the £, the claim be made either direct by this Board or through the Geraldine County Council, as may bo found requisite to comply with the conditions o£ the Act.”

Mr Charles Wright was appointed valuator and returning officer for the district.

Accounts amounting to £145 17s 6d were passed and ordered to be paid, and the Board adjourned.
