PROPOSED PAPER MILL AT TEMUKA.

[TO THE EDITOR J Sir, —In reference to the projected paper mill at Temuka I can hardly believe that the refusal of the public to subscribe the necessary, capital arises from want of enterprise or shortness of cash, seeing the numerous companies that are now being started in New Zealand for developing its natural resources and circulating money in the country, employing labor, etc. I have no doubt that considerable disbelief in its financial success exists in the minds of many who are aware of the want, of success attending the Mutaura and Dunedin Mills. But anyone acquainted with a modern paper mill could not help saying that they are beyond comparison, and that if the Mataura and Dunedin Mills had been started when the first settlers arrived in this colon}'they could hardly have expected to compete in the market at that period, so deficient are they in appliances. I may state on good authority that a printing paper mill will at no ternote date be established in this Island, and will shut out South Canterbury from this industry fur some years to coine ; nor will the raising of the necessary capital depand upon the district in which the mil! is to he started. Had the Temuka project been a success South Canterbury would for some years at least have monopolised the printing paper trade, henefitted the farmers in the district surrounding Timaru, and brought various other industries in its train.—l am. &e. FRANK J. NOBLE. "
