THE NATIVE DIFFICULTY.
[By Telegraph.] (Press Association.) Hawera, Oct. 1. I have just been talking to Mr Hunter, of Otakehu, upon whose land the Maoris have been ploughing. He tells me that many settlers blame him for not deciding to turn the Maoris off, but as Mr Rolleston, the Defence Minister, threw the responsibility upon him of deciding which course was to be adopted, he thinks under the circumstances he did what was best. Some other settlers on the Plains have made private arrangements and exchanges with the natives. Both races appear quite satisfied, and the rumors lately prevailing are now' subsiding *
Auckland, Oct. 1. Mr Hurst, M.H.R., has received a reply, from Mr Rolleston to the effect that none but drilled men will be taken as recruits for the A.C. force.
