The steamer Stormbird, which a left Wellington fpr Wanganui last night, returned at midnight, having broken the piston rod of one of her engines. Tarantara, Cary’s Company opened last night in the “Pirates of Penzance.” Great success. A Choice. Messrs Wm. Hutchinson, Andrew Young, and George Fisher are candidates for the Mayoralty. A Retreat. Christchurch, Sept. 27. MrK. C. J. Stevens will not present himself for re-election, pressure of private business being the reason alleged. , The Hon E. Richardson intends standing for the representation of Lyttelton. . On Strike. A deputation of the railway men on strike waited upon the Sydenham Borough Council last night, and the Council having heard what they had to say passed a resolution to bring the whole matter before the tead of the Railway Department, or if necessary the Minister for Public Works, with a view to having the affair sifted. The deputation subsequently waited on the Christchurch City Council, but that body declined to see them, on the ground that the matter was not one which could be legitimately considered as an item of civic business. A Good Sign. Mills for dressing flax fibre to be used in paper making have been opened at Amberley. The fibre will be ground to pulp at mills, belonging to the sumo owners near Christchurch.
