Parliament was prorogued to-day till November 24, by Commission. Very few members were present. This morning’s “ Ashburton Mail ” says: “ A Wellington correspondent states that Mr Wakefield, M.H.R. for Geraldine, has promised Mr Weston a constituency, as he stands no chance of re-election on the Coast. This is very charitable of Mr Wakefield, considering that his own constituency is eagerly looking out for abetter representative. Mr Wakefield, it .may be remarked, has in bis pocket a formal promise of the portfolio of Public Works, so singularly kept vacant during the session by the Cabinet, and which portfolio he will hold as soon as the prorogation takes place. A more fatal step the present Ministry could not have taken, and it is one which has been condemned very freely in the Assembly by both friends and opponents of the Government —by the former most markedly so, and no wonder.”
