Large Lime Kilns are now in course of erection close to the property, The particulars of the property are as follows: —It is Freehold, of 20 acres in extent, the property of Mr George Merdith. In the land two shafts have been sunk - the main or working shaft is Oft by oft wide, aud is 32ft deep, from which Coal has been raised from a seam 2ft thick. The shaft is timbered from the surface. The other shaft referred to (half a chain from the main shaft), is 7ft by 4ft wide and 45ft deep, and is well timbered, and has been sunk through two seams of Coal of sft and 4ft respectively, and on to a 2ft 6in seam. Fire Clay, and an excellent Chalk is likewise found in large quantities, and is pronounced by competent authority to be eminently adapted for pottery and sanitary pipes, gas retorts, firebricks, &c, The Coal is easily obtained, and is Of the finest quality for household and manufacturing purposes, and its superiority for the production of gas, aud for steam purposes, has been proved by reliable tests, As this Coal is admitted to be a really good Coal for steaming purposes, it is proposed to have constant supplies in depots, so that the public can always get what they may require. Building Stone is found on the property, and ,Marble within a few chains, of a very'superior description, also abounds, The Building Stone is a fine white stone, easily worked, and does not disintegrate from exposure to weather, some quantity of this stone having b:en used in the building of the Christchurch Cathedral. A large quantity of good Timber is in close proximity to the ground, and easily obtainable. The Coal has been tried for steam purposes, and found to answer admirably, as the following testimonials show: — “Timaru, Nov. 29,1880. “To Mr George Meredith, Kakahu. “ Sie, —I have used the coal supplied by you from the Kakahu coal mine (about five tons) in my mill in Timaru, and found it most satisfactory, and consider the coal well adapted to be used for steam purposes. It is contemplated importing the very best machinery procurable, the probable cost of which,includ ng necessary buildings, will amount to £15,000 ; and as the Promoters do not intend to take action unless at lea«t 20,000 Shares have been taken up, there will be ample capital for working expenses. The following local advantages have influenced the Promoters in choosing Temuka as the site of the projected Mill, viz. ; • («.) Connection with the Main Trunk Railway by a siding, thus giving direct communication with the principal centres of population and seaports. (i.) An unlimited supply of pure water, free from iron and other deleterious matter. (c.) Above all, an abundant supply' of the raw material, consisting of straw, native flax, and other fibre, which are to be had in the immediate neighborhood at very low rates. The Promoters, after mature consideration and careful investigation, have no hesitation in placing this scheme before the public, and soliciting their co-opera-tion, in the full assurance that the enterprise will be a boon to the colony at large, and a profitable investment to the shareholders. Furthermore, it is hardly necessary <o point out tiie many advantages which will accrue from an industry of this kind, such as the utilisation of materials now wasted, employment; of labor, the circulation of capital, and the establishment of kindred industries, which is sure to follow in the wake of that now projected.
