TAXATION IN CALIFORNIA.
The ’Frisco correspondent of the "New Zealand Herald,” states:™ The heavy taxation has driven awav many of the wealthiest of our citizens, and now New York is the centre to
which fashionable Californian resort ; and, by the way, there is quite a strange rule among hotelkeepers, East. If you register from San Francisco, you pay double as much as if you register from any Eastern city. “ Why so ?”• I asked a friend. “Well, .you see,” he answered “ out East they know tint Californians are enormously wealthy, and pay very high for their living ; so they change accordingly, lost the San Francisco swell should think ho was getting the best of everything. But they can’t play ihat little game on the Eastern folks ; not much, they are too well up to the figures.” I thus advise no one who goes hence to New York to proudly give it away that he hails from the Golden City.
