SUICIDE OF CAPTAIN EVANS.
[By Telegraph.] . Nelson, Sept. 9. Captain Evans of the steamer Wakatu, which arrived from Wanganui th : s morning, is missing. He was last seen about 5 a.m. when between Stephen and D’Urville Islands; he left a letter in his hat which was found hanging aft. Ths contents of the letter are not yet made public. Mr Baxter, chief officer, brought the steamer into port. Sept. 10.
There is doubt that Captain Evans did not fall overboard accidentally, as a note was found in his handwriting containing the woods, "Good Bye, God bless you all; take care of the steamer Mr Baxter till you got to Nelson.” He also left a will.
