NEWS OF THE DAY.
We desire to correct an error in an article which appeared in Monday’s issue, headed “ Death of a Centenarian,” The deceased left 90 great grandchildren, of whom Mrs Tindall, of Elizabeth street, Timaru, is the eldest.
It is a rather remarkable circumstance that in Tcmuka, Timaru, Waimato, and Ormaru, the number of births during the month of August was 11, and multiplies of 11 respectively, a-, the following will show: Tcmuka, 11 ; We.i mate, 22 ; Ti.maru, 33 ; and Oamaru, 4-1. MpR. W-. Caty’s Company will re-appcar at the Theatre Royal this evening, when the “ Pirates ” will again be placed on the boards, and as most Timarn play-goers will be doubtless anxious to r.enew .their acquaintance with that lawless body of men there will be a crowded house For to-morrow (Thursday) we are promised “ The Chimes of Normandy ” of which great things are said by the southern press. The Company is billed to appear in Ashburton on Friday night. The trial has been fixed for October 25. Yet another horrible tragedy, following closely after the Russell -street and Ei hmond tragedies, has occurred in Melbourne Tbe locale of this latest attempted murder and suicide is at Napier, street Fitzroy. Marcus Clota ’cut his wife’s head with a tomahawk in several places, and then cut his own throat with a razor. It appears certain that Clota must have been insane? for not the slightest reason can be alleged for the crime—as the couple appeared to have lived happily together. The victims of this horrible affair lie in a precarious , condition in the Melbourne Hospital. The New Plymouth magistrate recently shunted on to the Wellington district a. notorious vagrant named Jack, who has spent the better part of his life in gaol, by committing him to Wellington gaol for a lengthened term. Mr Shaw, R.M., gave a Roland for an Ollivei by sentencing Jack to three months’ imprisonment in the New Plymouth gaol for vagrancy. The “ Pall Mall Budget ” says there seems to be little or no doubt that the legal proceedings to which Mr Bradlaugh is a party will culminate in bis bankruptcy, and as he cannot appeal for re-election until he has obtained his discharge, he is not likely to appear next session as a Member of the House, unless the legal proceedings take an unexpected turn.
