Mr Moss Jonas reports as follows : Horses —For last Saturday’s auction only a small number were brought forward. He quotes "ood draughts at £2G to £3O ; medium, from £l2 to £ls ; hacks, £8 up »o £1(). There is enquiry for young draughts and light harness horses ; a few of this class of stock would sell. Cat tie—Prime beef may be quoted at 255; medium, 22s Gd per ICOlb. For milch cows there is but little demand just now, but it is to be expected that an improvement will take place shortly. The demand for good stores is growing as the Spring advances. lie has enquiries for this class of stock, acd could place a limited number Sluep—Fat Sheep—The market is fairly supplied, and no .improvemmt in prices can be quo ed. He quotes prime xnuPon at 24d per lb. Store Sheep.—No business is doing in tl is class of stock.
pigs—He sold 06 wean -rs at from 5s up to 8s each. The trade for all classes of pigs is much quieter, and prices are several shillings per head lower than they have been for the past month. Miscellaneous —On Monday he sold by auction in one lot 20 perches of land in Hose street with two roomed cottage, and 9 perches in Catherine street with three-roomed-cottage thereon, both freehold, for £340 cash, a price that must be considered equally satisfactory to both vendor and purchaser. On the same day he sold by auction, under bill of sale, the stock-in-trade of a general storekeeper, and the attendance of buyers being very large and compefti n brisk, a heavy catalogue was gone through most successfully. On Wednesday he submitted a large quantity of oats, fowls’ corn and potatoes, the oats jealising Is 91, fnwls’ corn 8s per sack, and the potatoes 45s per ton. On Friday he sold a quantity of timber and firewood in the trucks at the railway siding at very fair prices, His sale on Saturday was well attended, and a large lot of miscellaneous goods and produce cleared out at good figures. In farm produce he quotes : Flour, 14s and 15s to 20s per sack : sharps, 8s ; bran, 4s ; oats in small lots, from Is 0d to 2s : fowls’ corn, Gs to 5s per sack ; cheese, no demand ; potatoes, 4s Cd to 5s per sack : fowls, 2s Gd to 3s Gd per pair : geese, 4s ; and turkeys, 4s to 8s each, the latter price being for prime young gobblers.
Messrs 'William Collins and Co. report holding their regular auction and market on Saturday at their rooms. The attendance -was large, and as a result all lines submitted were eagerly bought up at the following figures, which cannot fail in giving satisfaction to the owners. Flour (millers’) £ll, farmers’, £!) ; bran, 7CK Derwent potatoes, owing to the large quantity coming forward, combined with being late for exporting to the Australian colonies and to the northern ports, showi g a tendency to lower in value, they quote 50s per ton in trucks ;in store, 52s fid to 55-’. Oats—They sold privately 200 sacks (feed), ail faults, at Is 5d per bushel. Fowl wheat, 7s to Os per sack, very little offering ; cheese, 4cl per lb ; legs merino mutton, Is : cross-bre ’, Is fid ; sides, 2s fid ; hams and bacon, all faults, -id to 3d ; bacon pigs, 3d to 34d ; fowls, 2s fid to 3s fid per pair ; ducks, 5s per pair ; butter, 7d per lb ; eggs, 81 per dozen. Furniture, drapery, hoots, china, glassware, groceries, and oddmi nts were easy to dispose of at payable figures.
Messrs Maclean and Stewart report for the past week ; Horses—A very great improvement was observable in the the demand for useful draught horses at their yards to-day, and almost every animal of the right sort passed under the hammer found ready buyers at satisfactory rates, and several purchasers did not secure what they required. Their entries consisted of 21 head various kinds, the most of which changed hands at the following prices, viz ; —From £3O to £3(! for first-class draught*, the latter price being obtained for a handsome gelding; from £lB to £24 for'medium sorts ; and from £8 to £l2 for ordinary hacks, the latter on account of their inferiority, being still in little demand. On Wednesday the 31st, they sold on the farm, Waimale, on account of Mr Cha«. Clark, 12 useful farm horses, which averaged £23 per head, one good gelding fetching £3fi.
Cattle—The market for store cattle continues to improve, and good young stock command a ready sale. At the Washdyke on Monday, the 29th, their entries consisted principally of milch cows, the lot of which were cleared at an average of £5, which price was a fair one considering the age of the cows ; calves they placed at 31s each. Fat cattle are plentiful, and may be quoted at from 20s to 22s Gd per 1001 b, at which price they sold privately a line of 25 steers. Sheep—They have made no transactions of importance in store sheep since they last reported, and quote values as but little altered since then. Fat Sheep—There is a good supply. They quote mutton at from 2J per lb. Land—On account of theßoard of Governors of the High School they on Saturday submitted by. auction two education reserves, 1 GO acres at Albury and 1000 acres near Waimate. The former was offered in four sections, but failed in reaching the upset price, and was, passed in. The latter was purchased by Mr Wm. Evans, at £2 0s GcLper acre. This should prove a lucrative investment, as they understand the land is of good quality and is easily worked. London, Sept. 2. Consols have fallen and are quoted to-day at 99. Nefv Zealand securities remain firm at the following quotations r—--5 per .cent 10-10 loan, 101; 5 per cent 1889 loan, 102£ ; 1£ per cent 1879-1901 loan, 99£. Trices in the wheat market are declining, ■ owing to finer .weather. Adelaide wheat, ex warehouse, 57s New Zealand wheat, ex warehouse, 57s Gd ; Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, 11s Gd. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 1,'£80,000 quarters. . Australian tallow has advanced Is per
cwt; best beef, 37s ; best mutton, 395. The total stock in London is 16,200 casks. Best Sydney copra, per ton, £l4. At the wool sale to-day 10,900 bales were catalogued,
