C, At a meeting of the Wellington Hebrew Congregation yesterday, resolutions were passed expressing sympathy with their distressed and persecuted co-religionists in South Russia. Subscription lists were opened and nearly £IOO was subscribed in the room. A Committee was formed for the purpose of collecting subscriptions. Libel Action. CiiuiSTCiiuucir, Sept. 5. It is reported here that Mr Joseph Ivess, formerly newspaper proprietor, has instituted a civil action against Mr Zouch, proprietor of the “ Ashburton Guardian”, for libel. For a Good Purpose. The “ Lyttelton Times ” Sick Fund Society expect to make £IOO clear by their dramatic performances given on Friday and Saturday last. The Governor’s Trip to Fiji. Dunedin, Sept. 5. Clayton’s Creditors. At a meeting of Clayton’s creditors to-day, a motion proposed to give him his discharge was negatived by creditors representing majority in value. Eleven voted for the discharge and- three against. A similar vote was given on the question of maintenance. Reported Case of Drowning. Marshall, cook of the schooner Mary Ogilvie, who was reported drowned, has turned up. The police unsuccessfully dragged all yesterday for the body of the mate. Marshall says ho left him at midnight on Saturday to go on board, but Marshall being the worse of liquor, declined to go on board.
