STEEPLECHASE MEETING.

The gentlemen who during the past season have hunted with Mr Archer’s beagles, wound up the season on Saturday afternoon by a steeplechase meeting, limited to horses that have followed the hounds. An excellent course was laid off on the Saltwater Creek Flat, in the neighborhood of the Sportsman’s Arms, where a very varied country and a number of difficult jumps are to be found. There was a large crowd of spectators, and the races being exciting, these, as well as the actual performers, enjoyed the sport immensely. Last year, on a similar occasion, the spurt was very good, but this year it was even better, the arrangements being more complete. The difficulty of some of the “ country ” was bound to cause the unseating of some of the riders, and several spills occurred, but without any serious consequences. Mr Archer wielded the flag, Mr Hamersley managed the scales, and Mr D’Etnden acted as secretary. The first event, the Hunt Cup. a trophy valued at £lB, was won by Mr Jefferson’s Leap A ear, ridden by his owner. Mr Jefferson was one of four or five, out of the field of thirteen, who soon showed the rest the direction they had to go, and some of his companions coming to grief, he was left to sail in the winner, Mr Blundell on his mare Lurline coming in second a dozen lengths behind him.

The following are the list of the com petitors for the Chief events : —• hunt cup. Trophy, yalue £lB.
