NEWS OF THE DAY.

The Geraldine Eacecoure Keserve Bill was read a second time in the Legislative Council yesterday. The Parliamentary Oaths Bill was thrown out in the Council yesterday by 13 to 10.

The steamship Protos arrived at London on Wednesday from Melbourne. Her cargo of meat, consisting of 200 carcases of beef and 3000 sheep is so far as can be ascertained, in excellent condition.

Hr R. W. Cary’s company calls here cn route for the North, on Wednesday, and will play two nights. On Wednesday night the ever popular “ Pira es” will be produced, and on Thursday evening “ Lcs Cloches de Corneville ” an opera new to Timaru but which has attained a wide popu larity elsewhere, is to be put on the boards. The Invercargill people are very much offended with Mr Cary for declining to visit their town without a guarantee.

The opening sale at the Makikihi yards takes place on Monday next, when Messrs Wildie, Allan and Stumbles will submit a number of cattle and horses to public competition. The yards are most conveniently situated close to the railway station, and should prove a great convenience to the residents in the district. The sale takes place at 2 o’clock in the afternoon, immediately after the arrival of the express trains from the north and south. Lunch will be provided and no yard fees will be charged on this occasion, Mr Moss Jonas, instructed by Mias Riddle and the trustrees in Michael Seyb’s. estate, will hold a very important sale of sheep, cattle, horses, farming implements, &c., Ac., at the farm near the Levels Railway station, on Monday September sth. Tbc Sale which comes off at 1 p.m. will bv without reserve, and lunch will he provided. The latest from Wellington is to the effect that the obstruction to the passage of the Representation Bill lias been removed. This afternoon Mr Sheehan and the Nelson members made their final protest against the measure,and regretted that the struggle was unavailing as Canterbury and Otago had got the “ whip hand.” At the Primitive Methodist Church, to-morrow, anniversay services will be preached in the morning by the pastor, the Rev J. Durabcll, and in the afternoon and evening by Mrs Holder of Christchurch. Mrs Holder will deliver a lecture on Monday evening on “Daniel” and the anniversary soiree will take place on Tuesday evening commencing at 6 ; 30 p.m.

The Timaru Hospital returns for the month of August are as follows :—Patients under treatment at date of last return 35, (28 males and 7 females). Admitted during month, 19 (15 males and 4 females)* Discharged during the month, cured, 19 (10 males and three females). Relieved, (> (4 males and 2 females). Incurable, 2 (maid.'). Dead, 3(2 males and 1 female). Remaining under treatment, 24 (19 males and 5 females). Out patients.relieved, 25. At the meeting held yesterday (after we went to press) in Mr Granger’s ollices re the proposed thoroughfare westward it was stated that Mr Rhodes had consented to grant a chain wide road through his paddock running alongside the S.C.A.A. Club’s grounds and also through his land between his paddock and Church street. His Honor Judge Ward and Mr Cull-, mann also offered to grant a road a chain in width through their respective properties in the line of the new road. It was resolved to have the projected road surveyed for the purposes of the Land Transfer Act, and to petition the Levels Road Board to further the formation of the road. A Committee meeting will be hold on Sept. 13, when progress will be reported.

The principal warehouse men in Dunedin have telegraphed to the Colonial Treasurer that.they cannot see in what way the proposed abolition of duties on cotton goods will benefit the public to any preccptible degree, and conclude: earnestly requested that further consideration be given to the matter before any such change be contemplated, and it is therefore respectfully suggested that the duties remain unaltered.” A similar telegram has been sent to the members for Dunedin.

They appear to have been having some very rough weather clown south. At the Uluff there was a perfect hurricane on Monday. The passengers who endeavoured to land on the pier from the Rotamahana were blown down, and it was with much difficulty that they saved themselves from being swept into the sea by the violence of the wind. Miss Pomeroy and several others connected with the dramatic company now in Dunedin were amongst the passengers who met with such a rough welcome to New Zealand.

Mr W. Upton, architect, invites tenders for erection of a dwelling-house at Temuka. H. Coxhead, photographer, has taken those premises lately occupied by the Americans, in George Street, near Bailway Station, and having had extensive alterations, can now take photos instantaneously.
