GOVERMENT INSURANCE.

The following is an extract from the report of the Government Insurance Commissioner for the year ending June 30, 1881, and laid before Parliament yesterday : —The funds of the depart ment at the end of the year amounted to £557,230, being an increase of £97,894 since June 30, 1880. The interest received on the invested funds for the twelve months amounted to £26,505, or within £2OOO of the sura payable for the death claims arising for the same period. The rapid advance of the accumulated fund year by year is a noticahle feature in the history’ of the office. The following figures will show how these accumulations have grown during the last six years ; Year ended, Amount of Increase on

In the three years ended on June 30,1881, the funds at the credit of the Department have risen from £292,523 to £557,230, being an increase of £264,707 or upwards of 81 per cent of an addition for the three years.

A. meeting of the promoters and others interested in the matter will be held at the office of Mr James Granger, Main South Road, on Friday afternoon, to receive the Committee’s report and decide on the next necessary steps to be taken rc the proposed road through King’s Paddock. Captain Jackson Barry has come out in anew character. He was billed to appear, as the Boatswain in ,! Pinafore,” produced by Cary’s Company last night in Dunedin. The Captain promised to give the “ sailor’s hornpipe” in his best style. The annual meeting of the Chamber of Commerce (adjourned from Wednesday last) was held this afternoon at the Borough Council Chambers. Owing to the late hour at which the proceedings commenced—nearly half-past three—we are unable to report what took place in this issue. About nine o’clock yesterday morning a fierce storm swept over Hilton, in the Kakahu Valley. Our informant, who has travelled in many lands, says he never saw such large hailstones. The wind came with great suddenness, it having been comparatively calm a few minutes • before. Horses and cattle broke loose, and in their fright scattered in all directions. The storm lasted for half an hour, and cleared away almost as suddenly as it came. It is a curious fact which the “Guardian” mentions in its notice of Lord Ilatherly, as baring been a Sunday-school teacher for 40 years that the only two men' now living who have been Lord Chancellors—Lq*d Cairns and Lord Selborne—have also been gunday School teachers.

At the II.M. Court this morning, before It. Bcetham, Esq., R.M., F. Docherty was charged once more with intending to desert his wife. Mr A. Perry appeared for the defendant, and Mr Jameson for Mrs Docherty. The case was adjourned until this, afternoon in order to enable the parties to arrive at an amicable understanding. At 3 p.m. Docherty appeared again in Court, and his counsel said the affair had been sclt’ed. The maintenance order will be rescinded on Friday.
