RAILWAY ACCIDENT IN VICTORIA.

FOUR PERSONS KILLED. Melbourne, August 30. A serious accident occurred this morning on the Melbourne and Hawthorn Railway, near Joliiuont. A tire of one of the wheels broke while the train was proceeding between Richmond and Jolimont, when the engine and all the carriages left the rails at the station gates, at the latter place. Some of the carriages capsized, and several pas sengers were injured, some of them seriously. Later intelligence from the scene of the railway accident at Jolimont, shows that four person;| have been killed, viz.—Mr Garnett, Baptist minister of Brighton ; Mr Jameson law clerk; Mr Bailliere, publisher; and a laborer whose name is unknown. The following are the names of the injured:—■ Seriously—Messrs Bliss and Lyons, both auctioneers. Slightly injured— Major Glach, Mr Fosbery of the Crown Law Office, Messrs Polmstie, Stephen, Renwick, and others. 1.20 p.m. The train which met with the accident this morning at Jolimont, was the express from Brighton to Melbourne. The disaster occurred at 9 a.m. When the train ran off the line three carriages were hurled over an embankment into a swamp. One first class carriage was smashed to pieces, and the other two were overturned. Three passengers were extricated dead from the first-car-riage. The scene at the place of the disaster was most distressing, and great excitement prevails throughout the city and suburbs over the occurrence. Traffic on the line is entirely suspended. The additional names of injured passengers have transpired—Edward Wright and Edwards. 9.30 p.m. It is stated that Mt Stephen who was seriously injured by the railway accident this morning, died this even" ing. It has transpired that the deceased gentleman was a relative of Judge Stephen. AH the other injured persons are progressing favorably. 10.30 p.m. The report of Mr Stephen’s death has been contradicted. He is still alive, but the doctors hold out no hope of his recovery. The total number of persons injured amounts to 20.
