In the action of divorce brought by Mrs Agnes Robertson Boncicanlt against her husband, Mr Dion Boncicanlt, in New York, £GOO a year was fixed as the amount of her allowance as alimony. Mr Gladstone’s definition of Liberalism is :—“ The policy of the Liberal party is the confidence in the people, tempered with prudence. That of the Conservative party is distrust of the people, tempered by fear. It is said that Madame Patti’s representative has demanded the sum of 400,000 dol, or upwards of £BO,OOO, for a series of fifty performances in the United States. " No speculator, however, being found courageous enough to offer more than three-fmirths of that sum, the professional tour in America of this fortunate prima donna will be conducted by her own agents directly on her behalf. A woman at Cape Girardeau, Mo., who had suffered from a husband'd neglect, traced him to a bar-room where he was playing cards with several companions. Setting a covered dish she held in her hands down upon the table, she said : “Presuming, husband, you were too busy to come home to dinner, I have brought yon yours,’’and departed. With a forced laugh he invited his friends to dine with him, but: on removing the cover from the dish found nothing but a slip of paper on which was written I hope you will enjoy your meal : it is the same your family have at home.”
