: The Waterworks Engineers handed in their report as follows: “ We have the honor to hand } T ou the following report upon the present cost of (he works, and the probable cost of completion. “ The total expenditure to date undercut direction amounts to £16,654 Ids Id. The present liabilities are £3981 14s 31d, probable addditions required on existing- contracts, £320, and the probable cost of completing the works £3560, making a total of £24,516 8s 41d. Prior to the actual survey, we made an estimate of cost of the proposed works, which amounted to £26,079. The expenditure to date, plus cost of completion, amounted to £24,616 8s 4£d, leaving a balance in favor of the original estimate of £1562 11s 7£d, but in addition to carrying out the works as projected, wc have also imported plant to the value of over £B.OOO, substituting 4x 3 pipes for the 2j as proposed in the original scheme ; this is an immense improvement, and will give an ample flow and pressure for fire prevention purposes in all parts of the town. The real saving made is therefore about £4500.
“The available balance to credit of capital account, we estimate to be £11,602 17s IU-d. This saving is in part due to the ample supply of labor which has been available for the work, and to the favorable conditions under which materials have been obtained. But a great part is also due to the great care taken in locating the various works and the economy of design adopted. Heavy and expensive structures have in all cases beeffavoided by giving an increased fall at allgully crossings—small iron flumes are capable of carrying the same amount of water as the race. Wooden iluraing hag only been used in short lengths w here no extra fall could be obtained, aud w'henevor practicable masonry and concrete have been used in place of timber, “ The method adopted by your Council of letting the work in small contracts, enabled parties of working men to take them up, and has proved very successful. We append hereto a schedule showing the existing liabilities on the contracts, and the estimated cost of completion.” ADJOURNMENT. The Council then adjourned until Thursday next, when a special meeting is to be held in connection with waterworks matters.
