MAGISTERIAL.

TIMAlii: -THIS DAY. (Before E. G-. Stericker, an 18. Woollcombe, Esqs., J.P.’s.) DEUNKENNESS. A first offender was discharged with a caution. STEALING FfiOM A DWELLING. Frederick William Dunn and Edwin Edwards, two young men until recently employed as steward and barman respectively at the Ship Hotel, were charged with stealing about £4O on August Id, the property of Mr Dan McGuinness. It appears that on the night of Sunday, August Id, the manager of the Hotel placed £250 in the safe, but on the Monday morning found that some one had got at the key, which he kept in his room, and some £4O was missing. Subsequently Detective Kirby arrested the accused on suspicion of being concerned in the robbery, and in Dunn’s pocket found about £SO, chiefly in notes “one of which was identified as having been in the safe as the figures “ 39 ” were written on its back in blue pencil. On examining Edward’s pockets the detective found between £ls and £2O in them. Edwards asked leave to address the Bench. He knew nothing more of this business than their Worships did. He was merely helping Dunn to remove his boxes to the Railway Station when he was arrested. Detective Kirby having deposed to the arrest of the accused, Inspector Pender asked for a remand, and the men were remanded to Wednesday next, the Bench intimating that they would accept bail, which they would fix at £l5O for each of the accused, and two sureties each of £75. The Court then rose.
