BRICKS AT A PREMIUN.

A writer in a Melbourne paper says : —The scarcity of bricks testifies to the activity of the building trade just now. Orders, lam told, are executed according to priority, and a load of bricks like a box at Her Majesty’s, must be bespoke a month -or two beforehand. This dearth of tho article, to make which was such a trouble to the Israelites in Egypt (who would have much preferred lending money to Pharaoh at a fair rate of interest), led to this occurrence —A shrewd speculator, with a memory, bought a large vacant building, which stood on a suburban allotment. The house had been built of imported English bricks lavishly used with thick interior walls instead of the ordinary thin partitions. He pulled down the house, and has sold as many bricks as paid for tho allotment. He has as many bricks left as will build a house of reasonable construction, and has made altogether a pretty speculation.
