[Per Times Special Wire.] SuicideAuckland, August 18. The suicide of Arthur Craig, at Church Hill, was a very determined one. About half-past two on Monday morning the neighbors were alarmed by the screaming of the deceased’s young children and an alarm of lire. On entering the house they found Craig had tied his feet to a colonial sofa on which he was lying, and had set fire to a quantity of low he had col lected upon him. They tried to pull him from the couch, but he resisted strongly, holding the wooden bars at the head so that they broke away with him. He was then got from the burning couch, and was laid on the floor which is even charred where he lay, Craig died at 9 o’clock on Monday before Dr Edgelow arrived frem Hamilton. The deceased was a widower, having a married daughter living in Auckland ; another daughter, 17 years old, is living in service at Mr Bell’s, Church Hill. Several younger children lived with him in his house.

A seaman of the barque Berwickshire has been sent to gaol for 3 months for broaching cargo. An Old Offender., At the Magistrate’s, Court Christina Wilson, an old offender, was sentenced to two years’ hard labor on two charges of larceny from St. Mary’s Cathedral. A Brutal Husband. Oamaru, August IS. A case of brutal ill-ticatmenl of a wife has just come to light hero. Brit-fly stated the facts arc On the 3rd inst., the unfortunate woman, whose name is Isabella Augustus, wife of a Swede named Charles Augustus, laboring man, was confined. Five days afterwards the brute Augustus ill tieated her for several days, refusing to permit her to see adocter,or allow her any assistance. This conduct coupled with threats upon her life, was continued until Tuesday, when the case ot the unfortunate woman became known, and she was lemoved to the hospital. She was then found to be in a critical condition. Information was at onco laid against Augustus, and ho was arrested yesterday on a charge of assault. As scions doubts are entertained of the woman’s recovery, her depositions were taken at the Hospital last evening, and disclosed a course of brutal ill-treatment. Augustus is to be brought up this afternoon.
